VIDEO ART

The work under the umbrella name "Video art" consists of different expressions, approaches, processes and motion-media or their use, as well as combinations of video/motion and other media.

"Fluid Folds" by MOTTA and IOFEYE. Part of the explorations into fabric, movement, light, projection and sound.
This experiment consistent in projecting recorded pieces of speaking face onto each other's in different speed and recording that, then using those clips as input for live mixing by IOFEYE onto a loose piece of fabric behind which MOTTAcreated dynamic movement with her body. Equally, the sound of speaking faces in different speeds and pre-recorded "breath -sessions" were then mixed and used as a sound tapistry for

APPROACHES:

Specific creations and processes have a  linear and narrative structures, while others are explorations of possibilities of video collaging and super-impositions of layers and different media on vertical axis, extracting pieces and samples and synthesizing them into new messages and creations.

Material I use consists of own recordings, sampled pieces, photographs and drawings "processed into motion", writing, recorded processed pieces. I often work with reiterative processes, where a sample or a piece of recording is being worked upon in a specific way until something entirely new emerges, and frequently I work with video and audio track simultaneously.

THE SONIC CONNECTION

There is a sense of creating visual music, where audio and image, motion and silence are interconnected and create the totality of expression, in much the same way I EXPERIENCE sound and light/ image as a seamless reality. For the sound aspect, I use own recordings of all kinds of phenomena (breathing, speech, atmosphere, nature, animals, traffic, mechanical sounds, "weird" sounds I experience), sampled pieces from recordings or music, processed pieces, micro-cut pieces  and samples recorded while live mixing, which then again are combined into a new sound structures.

In own practice also work in a more direct way with triggering sound or image response from one media to the other (using Ableton, Max (Cycling 74), Resolume Avenue, Arduino). So the sound structure gets affected by the video "behavior" and vice versa, based on the assigned parameters of interaction. This opens a vast portal of possibilities where elements across media and sensory fields can interact and where language of expression spills over and extends from one medium to the other.

THE TEXTURAL AND SPATIAL CONNECTION

Video and motion art for me goes beyond only image. It can create atmosphere and sense of scapes and spaces. This dimension has been a very interesting one to explore, as the interplay of video and spatial creations with fabric forests, paper, bodies etc has opened up to en entirely new way of creating both storytelling and performance but also creation of experiential and interactive spaces.

LIVE VIDEO PERFORMANCE

I perform with live video creation at concerts, club-sets, cultural events, art installations and events, or mapping onto trees and rocks outdoors.

APPROACHES:

  • Pre-determined theme and expression: having a base narrative and expressive line and live mixing over

  • Fully spontaneous: feeling the music and the energy of the place/event and using the vast library of clips to synthesize, live process, mix, record in the moment and tell a story or create a corresponding visual mood.

  • Limited source: starting from a very limited sample source (sometimes a single image) and processing upon that piece until paths that i wish to take and that fits the mood open up. This results in very immersive and interesting processes for me and completely surprising visual conclusions at times.

  • Live feed processed: processing and cutting, mixing and glitching the live input from camera and combining with other loops. Here I often use pieces of live writing and drawing as well as faces and sceneries.

LIVE DRAWING AND ANIMATION

I create live visual drawing, where my drawing process is projected and possibly additionally mixed. Also, I perform with live drawing and animation using Tagtool.
